Subject: last run
This as with some of you was my last show. I lived in upstate NY at the time and always made the run to the shows at the Knick. I vividly remember truly being concerned about old Jerry for the first time after these shows but really didn't think that this would be the last time. Jerry seemed to me that he was in a little better shape this first night than the second. I had never really seen Jerry totally stop playing like he did during most of Franklin's. The crowd was almost pleading with him to do something. You could tell because every little bit he would play a little riff and the place would go crazy. I remember saying when that would happen, "OK here we go" and it just never happened. That being said, say what you want about most of 94 and all of 95 but I think these shows were packed with more emotion than ever before. Setting aside of course Jerry really not being able to perform any more. It didn't really matter, not to me anyway. You could feel his pain because every song he sang was filled with it, and he poured it out to us. Under the circumstances can you find a more emotional "Morning Dew" than this one? How about the "So many Roads"? I mean my GOD Jerry sounded like he was almost in tears during "Touch of Grey" and "Roses". I don't know about you guys but that has stuck with me for all this time. Every time I listen to those songs I damn near break down myself. Other than a family member I don't think any one's death has ever affected me like his. I can say this and mean every word. It has been 14 years since Jerry died and there has not been one day that I haven't thought about him. Not one.

I saw the run from highgate on down and even though we could all see that Jerry was not feeling well on this tour this night was very different than the rest of the run. The two nights were both good but this one had some magic to it. I was lucky enough to get miracled and made it in right before so many roads. i had seen many so many roads but the feeling on this one was great, Jerry was belting the chorus at the end and it brought tears to my eyes. I remember finding a place to sit on Jerrys side frony row off the floor, it was a perfect view of the man, and i said to a friend of mine " how bout' a nice help slip tonight?" He responded, " no way man" Just then the lights went down and the familiar opening riff put a smile on both our faces, that second set was the best second set i saw out of all that summer tour. Maybe it was the fact that it was the only indoor show all summer, Jerry felt comfortable, no sun in his eyes, no crazy heat wearing him down, he was right in his element...dark...cool and ready to rock....i miss the band..like every one else im sure.
